The American Raptors are looking to finish their 2024 Super Rugby Americas campaign on the right foot.

They’ll have the chance to do exactly that on Saturday afternoon when they take on Selknam in Santiago, Chile in Round 14.

Selknam bested the Raptors 26-7 back in Round 7 in a match that could’ve been confused for boxing rather than rugby. The match featured several scraps, and when it was all said and done, the Raptors had received four total cards – one red and three yellows – in a loss that ultimately snapped their two-match winning streak.

That match served as a turning point in the season for the Raptors, who wouldn’t win their next match until a month later when they beat Cobras Brasil in Round 12.

Neither the Raptors nor Selknam have a shot at the playoffs in 2024, but there is still plenty for the two sides to play for in Round 14.

For the Raptors, a win on Saturday afternoon would set two new team records since joining Super Rugby Americas in 2024. Defeating Selknam would give the Raptors their fourth victory on the season – two more matches than they won in 2023 – and would propel them over 16 table points for the first time. The Raptors finished in sixth place with 16 table points in 2023. A loss on Saturday would see the Raptors again finish in sixth place with 16 points, but one more victory in the win column.

Selknam is firmly in fifth place, but will surely be looking to complete the season sweep of the Raptors for the first time. The two sides split the season series in 2023, with the Raptors picking up their first-ever Super Rugby Americas victory over Selknam at Infinity Park in Round 9.

A Few Things to Watch For in Round 14

  • Thomas Morani has scored tries in each of the last two matches. If he scores on Sunday, it would mark the second time a Raptor scored a try in three-straight Super Rugby Americas matches. Ryan James also scored a try in the final three matches of 2023. Morani is also looking to add to his 2024 season try total. His five tries on the year are the most by a Raptor since joining Super Rugby Americas.

  • With penalties biting the Raptors all season long, the club is actually three cards shy of the mark set in 2023. The Raptors finished the 2023 season having received 23 total cards, and currently sit at 20 cards heading into this weekend’s Round 14 match. Those 20 cards are the second most in SRA in 2024, trailing Selknam and Yacare who both have 21 cards.

  • Strong performances by Rufus McLean and Watson Filikitonga in Round 14 could earn both players their fourth selection of the season to Super Rugby Americas’ First XV team which would tie the club record for the number of selections in a single season. Line Latu also earned four First XV selections in 2023.

  • The Raptors can also improve upon the last season’s kicking percentage with a solid outing in Round 14. In 2023, the Raptors made 64 percent of their kicks for points (penalty goals, conversions, and drop goals). The Raptors have made 72 percent of their kicks for points heading into Round 14 of the 2024 season.

  • Ignacio Mieres can solidify a spot for himself on the 2024 Super Rugby Americas leaderboard for points scored. Mieres is currently tied for eighth place in the table with 37 points scored. He is eight points back of the sixth-place spot, and two points one point ahead of the tenth-place spot in the table.
