For personal reasons, Marcelo Loffreda will not be able to serve as the head coach of the American Raptors in 2024. The club would like to wish Marcelo all the best moving forward.

David Butcher

David Butcher will take over as the head coach of the American Raptors for the 2024 Super Rugby Americas season. Butcher brings with him an impressive coaching resume. He joins the club after spending the last seven years as the head coach of the men’s rugby program at Queen’s University at Kingston in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Upon taking over the program as the head coach of the Gaels in 2017, Butcher posted an impressive 36-2 regular season record, an Ontario University Athletics playoff record of 9-3, and a Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship record of 7-5. He was the first full-time head coach in the history of Queen’s Men’s Rugby and helped lead the program to three-consecutive OUA Championships from 2017-2019 along with one second-place finish, two third-place finishes, and a fifth-place finish at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship.

He won the Ontario University Athletics Coach of the Year award in 2018 and 2019. Butcher’s rugby resume is loaded with high-level rugby experiences as both a player and a coach with provincial and national teams in both Canada and the United Kingdom. He has served in several roles with Rugby Ontario, and also as the Canadian National A team assistant coach (forwards), National U20 coach (forwards), and National scrum development coach for Rugby Canada. Before that, he was the High-Performance coach for Scottish Rugby.

Cory Hector

Along with the addition of Butcher, the Raptors are also pleased to announce the addition of Cory Hector as attack coach for the 2024 season.

Hector brings extensive coaching experience to the table. He’s been the head men’s rugby coach at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada since 2016. Before accepting the head coaching job, he was an assistant for the Gryphons from 2009 to 2015. Following his first year as the head coach in 2016, Hector was named Ontario University Athletics Coach of the Year. He’s led the Gryphons to three OUA titles in 2016, 2021, and 2022. In addition to his role at the University of Guelph, Hector has also been involved with the Toronto Arrows as a backs coach and the Director of the Arrows Senior Academy and has also been involved in several roles with Rugby Canada leading their national age-grade programs for both men and women.
