Amercian Raptors Rugby players engage in a pushing drill using padded equipment on the field.

The American Raptors are looking to ride the wave of momentum from their 29-21 Round 5 victory over Cobras Brasil into the Round 6 match against Yacare XV.

If the Raptors want to make it two in a row on Sunday, they are going to have their hands full with a Yacare team that finds themselves in second place in the Super Rugby Americas table with a 3-2 record and 18 table points. They are one point out of first place Dogos. The Paraguayan side will come into Infinity Park on a two-match winning streak after defeating Cobras 51-7 and Peñarol 41-24 in Rounds 4 and 5, respectively.

Yacare was the fourth and final team to make the playoffs in 2023, and they fell to the eventual champions in Peñarol in the semifinal stage. During the two matches that the Raptors and Yacare played in 2023, the Raptors offense was stifled in a 25-3 Round 4 contest in Asunción, Paraguay, and then came out on the wrong end of a 44-37 shootout at Infinity Park in Round 11.

Sunday presents several opportunities for a Raptors team that is riding high from their most complete victory since joining Super Rugby Americas ahead of the 2023 season. The Raptors didn’t just beat Cobras Brasil on Sunday, they did so while also preventing Cobras from picking up a bonus point and jumped them in the standings as a result. The five table points the Raptors grabbed in the win ties them with Selknam through four weeks. Knocking off one of the top teams on the table and continuing to collect bonus points would be big for the Raptors as they continue to navigate their way through their second SRA season.

Yacare has conceded the third-most points in the competition through five weeks, but they have made up for it by scoring the most points by a decent margin. The 190 points that they’ve scored through five weeks is 35 more than Pampas, the next closest team. The Raptors on the other hand have conceded the most points and scored the fewest points to this point in the season.

Yacare comes into the match with the most yellow cards in the competition with nine, which is two more than the Raptors have received. Yacare has also played one more match than all of the other teams with the exception Cobras Brasil. If the Raptors can avoid trips to the sin bin on Sunday, it could be the difference in the match.

The Raptors and Yacare will lock horns at Infinity Park on Sunday, March 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 PM MT. Tickets can be purchased here. If fans can’t make it out to Infinity Park, they can watch the action live on ESPN+.
