The American Raptors are on the ground in São Paulo, Brazil, gearing up to lock horns with Cobras Brasil on Saturday morning.

The Raptors enter the Round 12 match with their playoff hopes still alive. They will need to snap their four-match losing streak in addition to receiving some help from other teams around the competition if they are serious about making a late-season push for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Fortunately for the Raptors, the team they’ve had the most success against since joining Super Rugby Americas ahead of the 2023 season is this week’s opponent. The Raptors have compiled a 2-1 all-time record over Cobras Brasil. The Raptors defeated Cobras Brasil for the second straight time 29-21 during this year’s Round 5 matchup at Infinity Park.

While the Raptors have had success against Cobras Brasil, all three of the matches that the two sides have played against each other have been tightly contested. The margins of victory have included decisions by three points, four points, and eight points. Saturday’s match will likely follow the same trend.

Cobras comes into the Round 12 match with a 2-8 record and eight points in the Super Rugby Americas table. The Raptors are just ahead of them in the standings with a 2-7 record and 11 table points. Cobras’ two wins on the season have both come against Peñarol while the Raptors’ two wins have come against Cobras and Yacare XV.

There are 15 table points available for the Raptors to grab, and they will need every single one of them along with some help from around the league if they are going to sneak into the fourth and final playoff spot. They will need to overtake Peñarol and Selknam – who have 22 table points apiece – in the table to slide into fourth place. That gives the Raptors a four-point margin to work with over the final three weeks of the season. To have a chance heading into Round 13, the Raptors will have to hope that Peñarol and Selknam lose their Round 12 matches against Yacare XV and Pampas, respectively.

Penalties have been a thorn in the Raptors’ side all season long, and could very likely be the difference in Saturday’s match as well. The Raptors have committed the second most penalties – 115 – and total cards – 17 – in the competition this season. No other team has been administered a red card in 2024, and the Raptors have seen two players get hit with a red card on the season, and both have occurred over a four-match span. The Raptors will need to avoid putting themselves in a hole with penalties throughout the match to snap their current skid and keep their postseason hopes alive.

The Round 12 match between the Raptors and Cobras Brasil will kick off at 10:35 AM MT on Saturday, May 11. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
