Raptors Fall to Dogos XV in 2024 Season Opener

The 2024 Super Rugby Americas season got off to a rocky start for the American Raptors on Friday afternoon.

The Raptors (0-1) ran into the Dogos XV (1-0) team that looked like the one that finished second in the competition in 2023.

The match was tied and three points apiece after 10 minutes of play after the two sides traded penalty goals. The Raptors had an early chance to take the lead with a second Francisco Quinn penalty goal, but the kick came up short and the Dogos took over from that point on.

Dogos notched their first try of the match in the 15th minute when outside center Leonard Gea Salim capitalized on a broken counterattack.

It was the first of three tries for the Dogos in the first half. The second one was the product of a rolling maul that hooker Boris Wenger dotted down. The third try came from fullback Mateo Soler just before the halftime whistle. Those tries were broken up by a pair of Julian Hernandez penalty goals and were supplemented by three Hernandez conversions to give the Dogos a 30-3 lead at the break.

Dogos picked up where they left off in the second half with a try from outside center Agustin Segura. Hernandez drilled his fourth and final conversion of the match to give the Dogos a 37-3 lead.

The Raptors stopped the bleeding with a try of their own when wing Thomas Morani dotted a try down in the corner. Quinn couldn’t make the tough conversion, but the Raptors cut the lead to 37-8 at the 59th minute, but the momentum didn’t last.

Dogos once again took control and finished the match with their foot on the gas. They added three more tries before the final whistle to close out the match with a final 56-8 victory.

Dogos picked up five table points – the maximum per match – with their bonus point victory over the Raptors. The Raptors didn’t secure any table points in the match.

The Raptors will try to get into the win column for the first time in 2024 next Friday when they head to Buenos Aires to take on Pampas. The match will be at 4 PM MST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
