Raptors at Peñarol Round 3

The American Raptors closed their three-match road trip to start the 2024 Super Rugby Americas season with a 37-7 loss to the back-to-back defending champions Peñarol on Friday evening.

Despite a promising start to the match, the Raptors (0-3), couldn’t get much going after the initial 20 minutes of the match. After Peñarol (1-1) settled in, they displayed the championship meddle that had placed them at the top of the table in the previous two seasons.

Friday’s match was the Raptors’ best start to a match throughout the young season. They capitalized on an early Peñarol yellow card with a Facundo Pomponio pick-and-go try to take an early 7-0 lead.

Momentum started to turn a few minutes later when Pomponio was hit with his second yellow card in as many weeks. Peñarol hooker Joaquin Myszka was the recipient of a rolling maul try that cut the Raptors’ lead to two points following a missed conversion.

From there, the defending champs took over. Juan Manuel Alonso punched the ball in for Peñarol’s second try of the match to give them their first lead of the day and they never looked back. Myszka scored his second try of the match on another rolling maul, and fly-half Juan Andres Zuccarino added a penalty goal to give Peñarol a 22-7 lead at the half.

The defensive effort was there for the Raptors, but the second half was all Peñarol. Tighthead prop Mathias Franco got the second half scoring with a pick-and-go try over the top of a defender in the 55th minute. Juan Manuel Rodríguez followed that up with Peñarol’s fifth and final try of the match a few minutes later before Ícaro Amarillo put the match on ice with a penalty goal in the 70th minute.

After a tough three-match road trip that saw the Raptors play three of the top four teams in the competition in 2023, a bye week and a trip back home to Infinity Park will be a welcome one. After a bye week in Round 4, the Raptors will return to action in Round 5 against Cobras Brasil. The Raptors defeated Cobras Brasil in the final round of the 2023 season. Cobras enters Round 4 with a 1-2 record after knocking off Peñarol in the season opener.
The Round 5 match between the Raptors and Cobras Brasil will kick off at 4 PM MT at Infinity Park. Gates for the match will open at 3:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased here. Fans who can’t make it to Infinity Park can watch the match live on ESPN+.
